5 Other Non-Toxic Ingredients

These ingredients are often labeled or considered natural but I don't believe that is entirely honest. They are "naturally derived". These ingredients are, however, used in natural products very successfully. They are not harmful, very useful and you only need a small amount.

  • Fragrance oils- Though not always completely natural, it is possible to add fragrance to your lotions and creams without going toxic. I get my fragrance oils from my local health food store or I order them from my favorite online stores that carry natural products. I try to always get essential oils, which are the best and most natural way to go. You can get essential oils that are 100% pure. But these can be very expensive. And sometimes regular fragrance oils have a milder, more appealing scent. Just make sure there are none of the Harmful Ingredients from our list in your fragrance oils. I use up to .5% fragrance or essential oils in my lotion if any. You can purchase a variety of essential oils in many sizes from an organic supplier online like ~Mountain Rose Herbs~.

  • Niacinamide- Water soluble. The active form of Vitamin B3. Does not have the same toxic effect as niacin. Non-irritating. Improves the appearance of aged and photodamaged skin. Very hydrating to the skin. Lightens the skin. Has shown to reduce fine lines. Has shown to even out skin tone. Usage: 1-3%

  • Potassium Sorbate- "Potassium Sorbate is the potassium salt of sorbic acid. It is prepared by the reaction of sorbic acid with potassium hydroxide. It is very soluble in water (58.2% at 20 °C). <Usage Rate: 0.1 - 0.5% for lotion.> It acts to prevent mold and microbes and to increase shelf life, and is used in quantities at which there are no known adverse health effects. It's used in many personal care products to inhibit the development of microorganisms for shelf stability. Some manufacturers are using this preservative as a replacement for parabens. Potassium sorbate is considered to be safe because of its long term safety record and non-toxic profile. Potassium sorbate is non-irritating and non-sensitizing. Allergic reactions are rare." It is the only preservative that is generally regarded as safe by the FDA. Source: Wikipedia

Please use caution when handling these chemicals in their pure form. Do not inhale, get into eyes or get directly on your skin when adding them to the mix. If you do- flush with cold water for several minutes. See our preservative chart for percentages.

  • Vitamin E T-50 Mixed Tocopherol Oil- Naturally mixed tocopherols, isolated from vegetable oils. It is a heat stable and powerful antioxidant. Protects oils from rancidity, or separating and turning yellow- or even smelling like mayonaise. Although T-50 is not an organic product, it is allowed for use in "organic" or "made with organic material" products. I use this one only when I can't use rosemary. See our preservative chart for percentages. You can usually purchase Vitamin E T-50 from an organic supplier online like ~From Nature With Love~.

  • Zinc Oxide- Approved by the FDA as both a skin protection and a sunscreen, it has been recognized as safe and effective for years. According to the FDA "it was perhaps the most frequently used agent in topical dermatotherapy." They also say "zinc oxide has a cooling, slightly astringent, antiseptic, antibacterial and protective action." Many medical studies have shown that topically applied zinc oxide can yield the essential element zinc that provides a host of nutritional benefits to the skin. Zinc oxide is the only ingredient that is FDA-recognized as having both UVB and UVA broadest-spectrum protection, as well as having therapeutic benefits.

"Because it absorbs both UVA and UVB rays of ultraviolet light, zinc oxide can be used in ointments, creams, and lotions to protect against sunburn and other damage to the skin caused by ultraviolet light. It is the broadest spectrum UVA and UVB absorber that is approved for use as a sunscreen by FDA, and is completely photostable. Additionally, since zinc oxide has anti microbial and anti fungal activities, it is the number one active ingredient recommended by pediatricians for the treatment of diaper rash."Source: Wikipedia

Usage is anywhere from .2 - 2% or even higher- depending on what you are using it for. If you are using it for sunscreen or baby balm- go high. If you are using it for a light face cream with sun protection or just to lighten an ugly color lotion- go low. You can usually purchase Zinc Oxide from an organic supplier online like ~From Nature With Love~.
